Borrow materials at the Grande Bibliothèque by placing items on hold

We’ve launched a temporary service that will let you borrow materials from the Grande Bibliothèque even though the public is not allowed to browse through the shelves while the library is only partially reopened.

How does it work?

  1. Place a hold on the item (whether it’s available or borrowed by someone else) from the catalogue (how?). If you are unable to do so online, call 514 873-1100 or 1 800 363-9028, option 2, for assistance.
  2. Wait until you’ve received an email or phone call informing you the reserved item is ready for you. It’s pointless to go the library before you’ve been notified.
  3. Within the next four days, come to the Grande Bibliothèque with your subscriber's card and your reservation code. Enter through the entrance that is closest to Ontario Street, next to the garden. Beyond that four-day window, you will lose your reservation. Your reservation code consists of the first letter of your last name followed by the last five digits of the number shown on the back of your subscriber's card.
  4. When you get home, place the borrowed materials in a place where they won't be handled for a 3-day period.

Please note:

  • Only subscribers who’ve received a notification of availability will be able to borrow materials. You will not be able to borrow materials other than the ones for which you’ve been notified.
  • You can place a hold on up to 10 items, including 5 movies or TV series.
  • If you are unable to go to the library to pick up your materials, we ask that you please cancel your request by logging in to My account in the catalogue or by calling 514 873-1100 or 1 800 363-9028, option 2.
  • Until further notice, no charges will be fined for failing to pick up an item.

A catalogue search will display a list of results. Click on the item's title in the list to display its description. In the Find it tab, click on the Place a hold button.

Exceptions

You cannot reserve an item if the Place a hold button is not displayed. This is the case when an item is only available for in-library use, for instance. You will have to wait until the Grande Bibliothèque has fully reopened to access these materials.
