Located in Rouyn-Noranda, BAnQ Rouyn-Noranda covers a territory with an area of almost one million square kilometres. It is part of the network of 10 Bibliothèque et Archives nationales du Québec (BAnQ) archives centres, loacated throughout Québec. Dedicated to the preservation and development of the region's public and private archives, it offers researchers and the public a consultation room and efficient personnel to guide them in the use of the wide range of materials the centre holds.

Every year, it welcomes hundreds of patrons, essentially from the educational and professional sectors. They use the centre's services for research concerning the history of their families, localities or regions. The genealogy component is one of the most complete since the centre also houses Généalogie Abitibi-Témiscamingue (GENAT).

BAnQ Rouyn-Noranda collection includes:

  • 1 573 linear metres of textual archives;
  • 1 283 170 iconographic materials;
  • 4 343 cartographic materials;
  • 4 122 hours of moving images;
  • 3 308 hours of sound recordings.

 

The archives preserved in this centre can be used to trace the history of Abitibi-Témiscamingue from the middle of the 19th century. The principal archives holdings include:

  • the collections of several photographers' studios (Joseph Hermann Bolduc, Euclide Blais and Maurice Boudreau), which provide an excellent window into social, political, economic and cultural life;
  • the collections of associations and organizations (Conseil de développement régional de l'Abitibi-Témiscamingue, Xstrata Copper Canada-Horne smelter) and the collections of individuals and families (Réal Caouette, Louise Desjardins, Donat Martineau), which provide a particular reflection of the influence exercised by community groups;
  • oral and audiovisual archives that provide eloquent testimonials of the lives of the region's pioneers
