A New Exhibition Focusing on Amateur Hockey at the Grande Bibliothèque: À nous la glace! – L’ADN du hockey amateur

Spokesperson: Jean-Thomas Jobin

Montréal, December 5, 2018 – Starting today, a new exhibition on amateur hockey, À nous la glace! – L’ADN du hockey amateur, opens at the Grande Bibliothèque. Designed and produced by Bibliothèque et Archives nationales du Québec (BAnQ), the exhibition celebrates the unique connection between Quebecers and a sport that is deeply rooted in Québec’s identity and the daily lives of many a family.

À nous la glace! L’ADN du hockey amateur bears witness to Québec’s reality as a northern society, and it also embodies Quebecers’ passion for a sport that is woven into every part of their history,” said BAnQ Chief Executive Officer Jean-Louis Roy.

Through photos, videos, unpublished archival materials, and interviews with young athletes, coaches, parents, personalities and retired players, the exhibition movingly portrays the role of amateur hockey in creating identity and building character, among players and the people close to them. The stories are the artefacts of this exhibition!

An exciting exhibition for families, school groups... and everyone else!

The exhibition includes an interactive trail on tablets and cell phones where one can answer a series of questions using information scattered throughout the exhibition. Young visitors and their class or family can therefore add an extra level of fun to their tour!

Visitors are invited to leave a record of their own hockey story thanks to an unusual interactive sound installation. They'll be able to record their anecdote, then hear it replayed in a room resonating with the sounds of arena hockey games. These small, compelling tales will enrich our great love affair with hockey. À vous la glace: the ice is yours!

BAnQ’s 10 archives centres throughout Québec will host parts of À nous la glace! – L’ADN du hockey amateur by making film excerpts available for viewing at computer stations. In addition, BAnQ numérique, BAnQ's digitial platform, presents part of the exhibition on the Web, so that citizens of Québec and the world can join in celebrating amateur hockey.

Exhibition spokesperson and passionate hockey fan

“As a ‘highly amateur’ hockey player for close to 40 years, I’m truly honoured to be the exhibition’s spokesperson,” said humorist Jean-Thomas Jobin. "Thanks to hockey, I’m still a child at heart. I keep on imagining I might be picked, even though I’m in my forties and my slapshot wouldn’t scare an Atom B goalkeeper! ''

À nous la glace! – L’ADN du hockey amateur is presented in partnership with Métro newspaper, Hockey Québec, and Québec’s Digital Cultural Plan.
