Joining provides patrons with a subscriber's card allowing them to use all services, collections and equipment provided on site at the Grande Bibliothèque or remotely on the BAnQ Web portal. Patrons will be able to:

To obtain your subscriber’s card, stop by the subscription desk (Comptoir d'abonnement) of the Grande Bibliothèque or at one of BAnQ's ten other facilities.

You have to present valid proof of identity and residence. All documents must be recent.

Proof of residence

  • Driver’s license
  • Official federal government document, including:
    • income tax assessment
    • family allowance cheque
    • employment insurance cheque
    • old age security documents
  • Official provincial government document, including:
    • automobile insurance certificate
    • social security cheque
    • welfare cheque
    • income tax assessment notification
    • tutorship or curatorship judgment issued by the Superior Court of Québec
  • Official municipal document, including:
    • school or municipal tax bill
    • real estate evalution notice
  • Document addressed to you from a recognized educational institution (secondary school, Cégep, university)
    • report card or transcript of credits
    • student or teacher identification card
    • proof of enrolment in a course
  • Utility bill (no more than 6 months old)
    • electricity
    • gas
    • telephone or cable
  • Official document from a banking institution or credit union (no more than 6 months old)
    • statement of account
    • credit card statement

TopFees

Joining is free of charge for all Québec residents. Non-residents of Québec can join by paying for the duration of their subscription.

Anyone holding a permanent or temporary residence permit (for work or study) and residing in Québec can join free of charge to all services and obtain a subscriber's card. You have to present valid proof of identity and residence. All documents must be recent. The duration of the subscription is determined by the expiry date of the residence permit.

TopDuration of the subscription

A BAnQ subscription lasts two (2) years.

When your subscription expires, you need to present your subscription card and valid identification and proof of residence at the subscription desk. All fines and fees charged to your account must be paid before you can renew.

TopChildren

Children can subscribe to all services. However, persons 13 years of age or under must be accompanied by a parent or tutor when they join. The parent or tutor signs the child's subscriber's card and is responsible for the subscription privileges granted.

Proof of identity is required for the child and proof of residence for the parent or tutor.

The subscriber's card for children provides access to all services offered at Espace Jeunes and in the printed music collection.

You must inform BAnQ immediately of the loss or theft of your subscriber's card and of any change of address.

TopLost card

If you lose your card, you must notify BAnQ immediately. Your new card will be given to you at the subscription desk, and, as with a new subscription, you will have to present proof of identity in order to obtain it. A fee is charged for replacing the lost card.

TopHow do I change my address?

If you subscribe to all services (subscribers with a library card), you can go to any one of BAnQ's facilities. To update your subscription record, please present proof of identity and proof of residence at your new address. You cannot inform us of a change of address by telephone or by e-mail.

Only if you subscribe to remote services can you inform us of a change of address by telephone or by e-mail by indicating your 8-digit client number.

TopRecord modification

You can change your landline phone number or cell phone number, fax number, e-mail address or password by going online to "My record", by phone, e-mail or in person.

For all other changes to your record, you must go to any one of BAnQ's facilities.
