Donating published documents

What documents does BAnQ seek to acquire?

Bibliothèque et Archives nationales du Québec seeks all documents published on Québec territory, regardless of the subject, language or era, as well as documents published outside Québec whose authors or subjects are related to Québec. BAnQ's collections are composed of the following types of documents: books, periodicals, geographic maps, sound recordings, musical scores, prints, posters, reproductions of works of art, postcards, electronic documents, software, microfilms and microfiches. Any document in good condition from one of these categories can be donated.

BAnQ keeps an up-to-date list of the titles missing from its collections.

TopHow do I go about donating documents?

Contact the purchase, donation and exchange section in order to provide, if possible, a list of the documents you would like to donate.
Documents donated become the property of BAnQ, which can dispose of them as it sees fit. Documents that do not meet acquisition criteria or that the institution has in sufficient number may be kept for exchange purposes or sent to other libraries able to use them.

TopCan I obtain an income tax receipt?

From a tax standpoint, documents donated to Bibliothèque et Archive nationales du Québec are considered a donation to the government. BAnQ can therefore issue a receipt for income tax purposes, indicating the fair market value of the documents it received and kept in order to complete its collections. The receipt is accepted by the provincial and federal departments of revenue. Donors should consult these departments or a tax expert for details regarding the conditions of use of this type of receipt.

TopWhat if I just want to have my documents appraised?

Book dealers specializing in the buying and selling of used books, or rare or old documents generally offer an appraisal service. Many of them are listed in the yellow pages of the telephone book under “Book Dealers – Used and Rare”. You can also consult the list of members of the Confrérie de la librairie ancienne du Québec.
