The sound recording collection

Music lovers, you're in for a treat at the music and film section, where you'll find a collection of more than 100,000 sound recordings, mainly on compact disc.

Discs can be borrowed or listened to in the library. Listening stations offer a varied selection of discs.

The Bibliothèque nationale du Québec (BNQ), now Bibliothèque et Archives nationales du Québec (BAnQ), has created a classification system adapted to this rich and varied collection, which covers all styles:

  • Classical and contemporary: from Gregorian chant to electroacoustic music, from Monteverdi to John Cage, from Maria Callas to Walter Boudreau–a full range of music for a full range of tastes!
Pop and rock: where Québec songs, techno, hip hop, rap, hard rock, ballads, soul and more come together
  • World and traditional music: music from here, but especially from elsewhere. A trip around the world in the company of La Bottine souriante, Youssou N'Dour, Cesaria Evora, Ravi Shankar, Johnny Clegg, Ibrahim Ferrer and Oumou Sangare
  • Jazz and blues: swing, New Orleans, West Coast, bebop, jazz fusion, Latin, etc.
  • Film and stage music: from the music of the Cirque du Soleil to the works of Michel Cusson, Ennio Morricone and Elmer Bernstein to the sound tracks of your favourite films and TV series

TopHandling and maintenance of materials

In order to ensure optimal use, disks must be handled carefully. If a problem occurs during use, please report it when you return the item to the Grande Bibliothèque.
