Located in Sherbrooke, BAnQ Sherbrooke covers a territory with an area of almost 10,200 square kilometres. It is part of the network of 10 Bibliothèque et Archives nationales du Québec (BAnQ) archives centres located throughout Québec.

Dedicated to the preservation and development of the region's public and private archives, it offers researchers and the public a consultation room and efficient personnel to guide them in the use of the wide range of materials the centre holds. The oldest items date back to 1793.

BAnQ Sherbrooke houses:

  • 2045 linear metres of written materials;
  • 75,020 photographic materials;
  • 2841 audio and film materials;
  • 6155 cartographic materials.

The public archives include the:

  • archives of the judicial districts of Saint-François and Bedford, in which the oldest items date back to 1794, including the records of notaries and surveyors, guardianships and curatorships, civil status records, civil marriage contracts, wills, inventory closures and judgments;
  • archives of the various government departments present on the territory, which concern, among other things, the inventory of sites of worship, aerial photograph coverage of the region, the management of the Winter prison or even the Baldwin fishery.

The private archives cover the:

  • family history (for example, the Bowen family fonds, 1799-1896);
  • literature (Alfred DesRochers fonds, 1910-1978);
  • music (Sylvio Lacharité fonds, 1910-1983);
  • trade and industries (Chambre de commerce de Sherbrooke fonds, 1881-1981, Paton Manufacturing Company fonds, 1923-1947).

BAnQ Sherbrooke also holds a few collections from MNAs, architects and photographers, as well as fascinating collections of postcards by Freeman Clowery and wax cylinders by Jean-Jacques Schira, covering the periods of 1840 to 1920 and 1897 to 1960, respectively. It should be noted that the collection also includes a financial register from Attleborough that recorded the purchases by the first United Empire Loyalists who settled in the Eastern Townships (1793-1828).
