Use of the collections

Using the national collection and the lending and reference collection: general information

Since the opening of the Grande Bibliothèque in April 2005, users have access to the various documents in the National collection of Bibliothèque et Archives nationales du Québec (BAnQ) and to a large universal collection. A broad range of related services are also offered.
Following is a brief overview of the conditions of access to the various collections and to the related services that are offered to users.

Access to the National collection

  • In order to preserve the integrity of the National collection, only on-site consultation – in the reading room and on the mezzanines – is authorized for most documents.
  • In order to consult documents of which there is only one copy, old, rare and fragile works or any other document in the collection that is located elsewhere, users have to ask at the service counter on level 1 of the National collection.
  • In order to consult journals, magazines, newspapers and government publications, users have to request them at the service counter on level 3 of the National collection.
  • The general book collection, the reference work collection (dictionaries, encyclopedias, bibliographies, directories, almanacs, etc.) and the microforms collection are freely accessible for consultation at all times.
