Accessing the Internet using a portable computer

Questions and answers about accessing BAnQ’s Internet network

WIRELESS ACCESS

What equipment do I need for a wireless connection?
Your portable computer must be equipped with a Wi-Fi wireless card that is compatible with the 802.11b and 802.11g standards.

Is this card already included in computers? Do I have to buy one and install it?
It is possible that your computer already has a wireless network card. If not, you can buy one at a computer equipment store.

Once the portable is turned on, what is the procedure for obtaining a connection?
You should make sure that your portable detects the wireless network, then activate your Internet browser and, finally, follow the instructions on the screen.

Do I need a password?
At the Grande Bibliothèque and the Montréal archives centre, you need to be a BAnQ subscriber. At the authentication stage, you must enter your user number and your password.

Do users of the wireless network have access to the databases available on BAnQ’s portal?
It is possible to access the databases, with the exception of those that are only available on-site. You can access those by reserving a multimedia station.

Can users of the wireless network access their email?
Access to Internet email services (Hotmail, Gmail, etc.) using the “http” and “https” protocols is permitted but no other access is authorized.

Are there places in the Grande Bibliothèque where reception of the wireless internet signal is better?
The wireless network covers more than 90% of the building’s area. It is, however, normal for the signal to vary from one location to another.

Can users access the wireless network in BAnQ buildings other than the Grande Bibliothèque and the Montréal archives centre?
The wireless network is also operational in the reading room of the preservation centre (Centre de conservation), on Holt St., in Montreal, and in the research room of the Québec archives centre.
