Up to the 17th century, maps were often highly decorative, illustrated panels of picturesque landscapes, sea monsters, exotic animals, people living in distant lands, and so on. Not only did these elements embellish the maps, they also contributed to the expression of a certain vision of the world. Come and examine the meaning of these embellishments based on several exceptional documents from BAnQ’s heritage collections.
