BAnQ, the SMQ and 18 organizations launch an appeal for the digitization of Québec’s cultural heritage

Montréal, Decembre 6 2010 – Faced with the need to guarantee that Québec’s cultural heritage be preserved, and to ensure that it is available on the Web, the multidisciplinary committee of the Réseau québécois de numérisation patrimoniale (RQNP) is inviting citizens and professionals involved in information, education and culture to support its actions by signing the Appeal for the digitization of Québec’s cultural heritage.

FOR THE DIGITIZATION OF QUEBEC'S HERITAGE. Sign the Appeal.

In 2006, Bibliothèque et Archives nationales du Québec (BAnQ) began a vast consultation process to draw up a statement of the facts concerning digitization of heritage material in Québec. This commentary led to a survey-assessment [PDF - 952 Kb, in French only] carried out jointly by BAnQ and the Société des musées québécois (SMQ). The results were published in 2009, and they showed how rich and diverse Québec’s cultural heritage is, how little of it has been digitized (only 6%) and the will of many organizations to create a cooperative network.

As follow-up to these reports, a multidisciplinary committee was formed that included representatives of the heritage, cultural and educational milieux, whose mandate was to promote decisive and concerted action toward encouraging the digitization of Québec’s cultural heritage. The committee presented an action plan to the Québec Ministry of Culture, Communications and the Status of Women in July, 2010.

“As has rarely happened in the past, we find that our professions are at the heart of what is truly a societal issue. With the abundance of possibilities that new technologies are opening to us, our responsibility is fundamentally engaged in the survival and the spread of our heritage,” said Dr. Guy Berthiaume, Chair and Chief Executive Officer of BAnQ.

“We are putting all our efforts toward creating a network of Québec’s digitized heritage,” said Michel Perron, Executive Director of the SMQ. “This is a decisive initiative, not only for the museum network, but for the entire Québec heritage milieu.”

By officially launching the Appeal for the digitization of Québec’s cultural heritage, BAnQ, the SMQ and their partners are today inviting the cultural and educational communities as well as the general public to support their efforts to digitize and disseminate Québec’s heritage, and thereby contribute to the survival and development of our collective identity.
