Checking bags and other personal effects at the entrance of the Grande Bibliothèque

To ensure that its premises are a safe and friendly environment, Bibliothèque et Archives nationales du Québec denies access to the Grande Bibliothèque to anyone who is carrying:

  • cumbersome belongings, especially ones whose size exceeds 30 cm x 41 cm x 61 cm (12 in x 16 in x 24 in);
  • items that could damage the premises or that could endanger the safety of individuals, such as golf clubs and hockey sticks;
  • sports equipment with wheels such as inline skates and skateboards (unless they are in a bag or attached to a bag that is within allowable size limits);
  • sleeping bags, blankets, groundsheets or mats (unless they are in a bag or attached to a bag that is within allowable size limits);
  • belongings giving off a unpleasant odour;
  • food or drink; the only allowable beverage is water in a clear plastic bottle.

There are size templates at the main entrance of the Grande Bibliothèque (on De Maisonneuve Blvd) that show the maximum dimensions for personal belongings allowable on the premises. Lockers are available to the public for storing luggage and cumbersome belongings. They are located in the hall, near the Berri St. entrance. Please note that padlocks are sold at the Grande Bibliothèque’s information desk.

The information above summarizes the Code of Library User Responsibilities of Bibliothèque et Archives nationales du Québec, a part of the Règlement sur le contrôle des effets personnels et des sacs à l'entrée de la Grande Bibliothèque de Bibliothèque et Archives nationales du Québec (in French only).
