Purpose of the awards

These awards are intended to provide financial support for researchers from outside Québec who come here to do research in one or more Bibliothèque et Archives nationales du Québec (BAnQ) buildings to consult documents of a heritage nature.

Eligibility criteria and rules of use

For the purposes of the programme, the expression “researchers from outside of Québec” designates a researcher who is not a resident of Québec within the meaning of the Health Insurance Act (R.S.Q., ch. A-29) and who is not domiciled in Québec. Candidates for the awards Félicité-Laflamme-Hoffmann are attached to a recognized institution of higher learning or research not located in Québec. They cannot submit the same project more than twice. During their visit to BAnQ, they conduct research on an aspect or on a component of the archival fonds and heritage collections of the institution. They take part, during or after their visit, in promotional activities related to their research. Researchers from outside of Québec who have been granted an award under the Research support programme must wait four years before submitting a new project.

Duration of the visit

The BAnQ research visit last a minimum of 20 days and a maximum of 120 days.

A complete application includes

  • A one-page* cover letter;

  • A research paper, namely a copy of a published article or analysis related to the candidate’s areas of research (maximum 15 pages or 6000 words*);
  • A curriculum vitae.

* The extra pages will be removed from the file before it is given to the jury.

Language of applications

All items must be written in French or English. Any document in another language must be accompanied by a French translation certified by an accredited translator.

Selection criteria

  • Suitability of the project given the objective of promoting BAnQ's fonds and collections;
  • Scientific quality of the research;
  • Dissemination potential;
  • Quality and relevance of academic and professional career.

Method of selection

Examination of applications by jury members who grant three visiting researcher awards.

Composition of the jury

Three members, including a faculty member at a Québec university, and two BAnQ representatives.

Annual timetable

Competition closing date: March 1 (the files must be mailed no later than this date; the postmark serves as proof of the mailing date)
Announcement of jury’s decision: No later than June 15
Start date of award: Between July 15 and March 1, following the announcement of the jury’s decision
